Emily’s Truth + Myth: Dermaplaning Debunked

Dermaplaning with Kim

Dermaplaning is one of our most popular add-on or stand-alone facial treatments and for good reason!

Truth be told, I was not a fan of dermaplaning! It wasn’t until my Medical Aesthetician, Kimberly, joined my team that I was re-introduced to dermaplaning. She asked why we did not offer the service and I explained that in the past, I had received dermaplaning at other practices and always experienced breakouts after the treatment. She assured me this would not be the case when she performs dermaplaning, in fact, it would benefit the current breakouts as well as help minimize and manage breakouts moving forward. To achieve this result, I would need to receive monthly dermaplaning in addition to a facial.  After my first month, I was hooked and am now on Kimberly’s table monthly.

Why did I have such a great experience this with Kimberly? Kimberly customizes each and every dermaplaning treatment for every patient and especially acne patients. She further explained that the removal of vellus hair (peach fuzz) and the removal of the microscopic layer of dead skin and skin cells allows the face to “breathe” and remain free of trapped oil and dead skin cells over the coming months.

Monthly dermaplaning is the golden ticket to clear, dewy, beautiful, and smooth skin!

A dermaplaning facial treatment involves using a surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle that is safely and gently skimmed across the face, removing dead skin cells, bacteria, and vellus hair. Dermaplaning was designed for maximum exfoliation benefits that smooth the epidermal layer of skin by removing the dead skin cells that can dull complexion, resulting in a flat and smooth skin surface.

The added benefit of removing vellus hair, reduces shadowing and reveals smooth, bright, and younger looking skin that gets trapped underneath the dead layer of skin.

Dermaplaning also promotes deeper penetration of your skincare products, which enhances the investment you’ve been making on your skin already, in addition to providing a smooth, dewy surface for makeup application. This facial treatment can also improve acne scarring, help prevent future acne breakouts by reducing pore congestion, and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. All those benefits from a 30 minute treatment! Dermaplaning can be a stand-alone treatment but we suggest complimenting it with a facial for optimal results.

HOW IS DERMAPLANING PERFORMED?

Prior to dermaplaning, the Medical Aesthetician evaluates the patient’s skin for removal of the dead skin cells and vellus hairs using the surgical blade. During a session, the medical aesthetician will wash the face with ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser and sterilize the skin. Once the skin is dried, it is then held taut, and the surgical scalpel moves precisely across the skin in short, gentle strokes until the dead skin and vellus hairs are removed. This is a painless yet very effective technique.

DEBUNKING DERMAPLANING: MOST POPULAR TRUTHS & MYTHS:

1. Dermaplaning causes hair to grow back quicker and thicker.

FALSE – This is the most common question I am asked about dermaplaning! Many individuals were told at a young age that if you shave your hair, it will grow back darker and thicker. Dermaplaning, waxing, and shaving all result in the same regrowth process of the hair. The hair follicle grows in three stages, producing the same hair size, amount, and structure regardless of how it is removed.

2. I should not receive a dermaplaning facial treatment if I have an active breakout.

FALSE – Although you should not dermaplane directly over an active lesion, working around the lesion and carefully removing the outer dead skin layer is very beneficial to resolving the lesion itself and the surrounding bacteria. Dermaplaning also provides relief in unclogging pores and congestion that could be contributing to breakouts. Furthermore, dermaplaning encourages deeper penetration of your acne products for the best possible results.

3. Combining a facial and dermaplaning is too much for my skin.

FALSE, false…triple false! – Dermaplaning is most effective when combined with one of our medical facials. By combining these treatments, you receive three levels of exfoliation and deeper penetration of the acids, boosts, and antioxidants from the medical facial, which will take the results to the next level!

4. Dermaplaning will exfoliate your skin.

TRUE – Many believe that dermaplaning is only for removing vellus hair. While that is one of the great advantages, dermaplaning has proven itself to be a medically beneficial treatment. Not only does this treatment exfoliate the skin by removing the dead skin cells, it also removes excess oil and bacteria, unclogs pores, improves fine lines and wrinkles, and texture – which are the most notable results of dermaplaning. This facial treatment frees the new, baby soft and smooth skin below the epidermis revealing a glowing complexion the whole month through!
