Happy New Year!

After the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s time to give your skin some much needed TLC. And what better way to ring in the New Year with “shedding” some “skin baggage” to reveal the new you!  Put your best face forward with this month’s hottest treatments… Dermaplaning and the Red Carpet Facial! These treatments can be stand alone or combined, for the best results, leaving you refreshed, revived and on your way to healthy, glowing skin for 2020!

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation of the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin). The skin is properly sterilized to prevent contamination and bacteria from entering the exposed pores.   A sterile, surgical scalpel safely glides over the skin at a 45 degree angle removing a microscopic layer of skin and dead skin cells.  Added bonus; removal of vellus hair (peach fuzz). The manual exfoliation of this treatment effectively removes dead skin cells and the hair follicles that are clogging and trapping the excess oil in the skin.  If the dead skin cells and excessive oil are not removed, this can not only cause pimples, but also prevent your skincare products from effectively penetrating the skin.

You will notice a difference in your skin’s texture and tone immediately!  This treatment diminishes fine lines and wrinkles, along with exposing a brighter, more vibrant complexion.

For best results, have Dermaplaning performed by a Medical Aesthetician on a monthly basis. This treatment only takes 45 minutes, with no downtime—which means you can pop in between meetings or during your lunch hour!

My Experience

I am going to admit it… I was a skeptic of this treatment!  When we started offering this treatment, my skin was breaking out, a lot. Kim, my Medical Aesthetician, kept telling me, that once my skin cleared up, to receive the Red Carpet Facial with Dermaplaning, monthly!  I confided in Kim, that years ago I had visited a salon and had a Dermaplaning treatment leaving me with small bumps and breakouts for weeks. She assured me that with her sterilization of my skin, her technique with the scalpel, in combination with the ZO Skin Health products and mask applied at the end of the treatment, that the treatment would significantly lessen my breakouts.

Since my first Dermaplaning and Red Carpet Facial treatment, I have had no breakouts and my skin is absolutely glowing, smooth and tight!  I am obsessed with this combined treatment! After, I let my skin breathe for the rest of the day and allow all the ZO Skin Health serums and brightening products to penetrate my now silky, smooth skin!

The cherry on top is the application of my makeup… smooth and flawless!

Myth Buster

I want to tackle a myth about Dermaplaning….your hair does not come back thicker or darker!  This is genetically not possible.  The reason why you could and should receive this treatment on a monthly basis is due to the hair follicle cycle.  Your hair grows in three stages: anagen, catagen and telogen.  Each strand of hair is at its own stage of development.  Once the cycle is complete, the hair cycle restarts and a new strand of hair begins to form.  The genetic makeup of the hair follicle is not altered from removal prior to the telogen stage (the stage where the hair falls out, naturally).

Why not just use the Tinkle product?

For the benefit of my readers that may not have heard of this product…The Tinkle is an at home, female facial razor. I don’t recommend this product for several reasons. To start, the tool is not kept sterile.  The face is generally not sterilized and/or prepped properly.  The tool is not a scalpel.  It is difficult to achieve a 45 degree angle on yourself, therefore, chances are you will only remove the vellus hair.  The lack of exfoliation of the layer of dead skin cells is essential and primarily the reason why it is best to have this treatment performed by a Medical Aesthetician.  And, lastly, breakouts occur regularly with this tool due to, again, the improper angle achieved by doing it yourself and the bacteria being pushed and caught up in the exposed pores.

I, personally, experienced the Tinkle at home razor.  Several months ago, I attempted to do this procedure, myself, with the Tinkle. I was left with patches of hair, small bumps all over my face and I suffered from breakouts for weeks.  In the garbage the Tinkle went!  From now on, I am leaving it to the professionals!

Dermaplaning Treatment:

The incredible results from Dermaplaning are achieved by the following steps:

Step 1: Cleansing of the skin with ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser

Step 2: The skin is thoroughly sterilized and prepped

Step 3: Our Medical Aesthetician holds the skin taut and gently glides the sterile, surgical scalpel across the skin to remove a micro-thin layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair

Step 4: Application of a ZO Skin Health Brightening Sheet Masque or ZO Skin Health Aloe Hydra Masque (chosen based on your skin’s needs)

Step 5: Application of Firming Serums and ZO Skin Health products to brighten and even skin tone

As mentioned previously, Dermaplaning is a great stand-alone procedure, however, if you add it to the Red Carpet Facial (see below for more details) your skin will achieve Red Carpet status!

What Is the Red Carpet Facial?

While many of us may never strut down an actual award show red carpet, you can still bring your skin A-game to an office party, big event, or a girls’ night out! After a Dermaplaning treatment, you can receive  the Red Carpet Facial to stimulate collagen production and increase cellular turnover. Great for all skin types, the combination of glycolic, lactic, and citric acids helps to diminish dark spots, improves rough texture, reduces fine lines and acne. While results can be seen with just one peel, significant results can be achieved with a series of three to four Red Carpet peels, with Dermaplaning, in a three-week interval.

What makes the Red Carpet Facial even more appealing, there is no pre-prep, no peeling or redness afterwards, and just like Dermaplaning, there is no downtime—so you can look like a celebrity at any time!

Red Carpet Ready

Step 1: ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser removes impurities and hydrates the skin

Step 2: Normally at this point, an exfoliator would be applied to the skin, however, if you’ve already had Dermaplaning prior to this procedure, we will apply a liquid Exfoliating Accelerator

Step 3: A peel prep solution is applied to the face and then 1-3 layers of the Red Carpet facial is applied. This is followed by a peel neutralizer to balance the skin’s PH

Step 4: To rejuvenate the skin, a combination of hydrating, brightening, and growth factor serums are used to encourage cellular function, collagen production, and elasticity restoration. This can even repair damage from sun exposure

Step 5: Finally, a ZO Skin Health sunscreen is matched to your complexion. Not only does the sunscreen provide broad-spectrum protection, it also works as an incredible makeup primer for the ultimate glow!
